Behaviour of matter - Expansion.

Behaviour of matter - Expansion: When particles  are heated, they begin to move around and the space between the particles increases, causing the substance to expand. The diagram below shows the effect of heat on the particles in a solid substance. Notice that the particles are vibrating more. Because of this, they are bumping into each other and the distance between the particles increases. This means the solid will expand.

1. The movement of the particles? They get slower as they are dying from the heat.

2. The size of the particles? They expand.

3. The space between the particles? They start to have more speed.

4. The size of the substance?

Aim: To observe contraction in gases.

Equipment: Aluminium can, Scissor tongs, Bunsen burner, heatproof mat, tripod and open container of water.

Conclusion: After we did the experiment we placed the can into the bowl of cold water which made the canned water crunch up.
